Well, not quite just yet, but Alistair Magee has found the next best thing in the form of a truck-mounted grapple chainsaw!
i’ve known Alistair for a while now and have watched his career progress in this time. Always keen to stay one step ahead of the game, Alistair has continually invested in equipment over time, not just to make his life easier, but also to increase the efficiency of his operation. His latest investment takes some beating though and is probably the envy of quite a few tree surgeons throughout the country.
Custom Built Truck, Crane, & Grapple Chainsaw
Alistair’s mechanical truck, crane, and grapple saw with chainsaw attachment has been designed with the unique input of an experienced arborist. Rather than a selection of components bundled together by an engineer to form a working solution, every aspect of this crane has been designed from the ground up. The resulting piece of equipment is the first of its kind in the UK. A custom-built remote-controlled tree removal machine that meets all legal requirements.

The investment has paid off and A.M Tree Surgeons has never been busier, but Alistair wanted to get his message across in a better way than was possible from simple social media posts. Naturally I was delighted when approached by Alistair to build a website to promote the nationwide hire of this grapple saw crane truck. The design brief was simple, to advertise his services, but also to clearly point out the health and safety legalities and responsibilities involved with using grapple saws for tree work. The resulting website went live just a few days ago and is only the first step, with future development already in the planning.

Tree Removal Grapple Saw Hire Crane Specs
The specs speak for themselves. With a vertical reach of 35m and a side reach of 31m, this beast of a machine is capable of removing the largest trees the UK has to offer. Its impressive reach makes short work of removing land-locked trees, providing the crane can get close enough.

The Grapple chainsaw attachment can safely cut and hold large branches and timber, lifting them clear of buildings and other obstacles, with no risk of damaging your client’s property. These 3 Oak trees were removed from a clients garden in under a day, with all the arisings craned onto the road. This saved the company we were working for possibly as much as 6 man-days. WIthout the grapple saw and crane, all the arisings would have been dealt with in the client’s garden, cut into small pieces, and walked several yards through a small gateway.

Craning out larger stems
Alistair still needs to don his harness for some of the larger sections of stem. The crane is still employed to do the lion’s share of the work though. We all know how laborious slabbing down big trunks is. No one really wants to do it, but in many cases it is the only way. Using a crane to lift out larger sections means less time standing on spikes, wielding a large saw, and putting all kinds of pressure on your joints, none of which our bodies were really designed to withstand. Take it from a veteran climber, it catches up with you eventually regardless of how invincible you feel now!
